The Flagship Program was developed as a community-school partnership in 1996 and provides after-school youth development/skill-building activities at all five of Missoula School District One’s county high schools, its three middle schools and three elementary schools. Flagship hires staff, called Youth Development Coordinators/Prevention Specialists, who are housed at the schools to organize, recruit for and oversee a wide variety of developmental after school activities for students, free of charge. Although it is open to all students in the school, we are always targeting those youth especially in need. Activities teach healthy choices and skills and act as an alternative to high-risk behaviors such as substance use, school failure, and peer conflict. Last year 7,949 youth participated in 634 different activities. Data shows that Flagship is effective in helping students do better in school, avoid risk behaviors such as alcohol and other drug use, and develop stronger peer and adult relationships. It also teaches important life skills while connecting youth with positive adult role models, their schools and the community.
